Update From Our President
NSA Pittsburgh hosted our second speaker in our Hall of Fame Speaker Series when we welcomed Patricia Fripp to Pittsburgh. Starting with Friday night, Patricia grilled each board member about how they begin their keynote presentations and presenting options along the way.

After hearing Patricia’s two sessions, which included her infamous mini coaching, everyone in the audience left with some nuggets of wisdom and ideas about how to improve their speaking business. In fact, she was so energized about her mini coaching that she said she could have gone on another two hours! Here are some highlights from her presentation:
  • Watch your ‘I’ vs. ‘You’ ratio. There should be many more “yous".
  • Add emotion to a statistic: "It might shock, thrill, disgust, horrify you to hear (statistic)".
  • Make other characters in your story the hero, not you. If asked to talk about yourself, give credit to the people who helped you get where you are.
  • Deliver the dialogue (say it). Don’t report on the dialogue.
  • In your speech, if you change times (then and now) go to a new place on the stage for the new time.
  • Stand still for impact phrases and move on transitions.
In addition, we honored our Toastmaster friends with a cake recognizing 100 years of service to speakers.

Thank you to our board members for all of their help with organizing the event, and to all our volunteers, guests, members, Joe Mull for his great presentation on “Why NSA Pittsburgh” and to Toastmasters and Fred Vornbrock for his help with encouraging Toastmasters to attend. Lastly, thank you Patricia for a fantastic opportunity to see you in action.
Just a note-Patricia would love to come back to Pittsburgh! Thank you everyone.

In Memoriam
We mourn the passing of a beloved former member of our association. Past Chapter President MJ Callaway was loved by so many. Jeff Tobe wrote: “She had a huge heart, was incredibly determined, and always willing to help. I am proud to have called her my friend. My heart aches.” Those who were fortunate to have known her will always remember her. The family has made the decision to have a private memorial service.

Member Spotlight:Jackson Kerchis
Born in Costa Rica, Jackson spent his whole life in Slippery Rock, PA. He is a speaker, author, and managing partner at Happiness Means Business & Warrior Leader Training Companies. He helps business and military leaders solve their people problems by deploying science-based strategies to improve performance.

He has been a member of NSA about 2 years and likes speaking because it is a “relatively safe and lucrative way to get an adrenaline rush. As I was trying to figure out how to make a living studying and teaching happiness, I landed on speaking. I usually speak to the ‘serious business of happiness.’ I share research that links happiness to improved sales performance, income, health, problem-solving, creativity, memory, and even stock performance and military readiness. I then give practical tools for happiness and leadership to improve individual and organizational performance.”
“I have spoken to everyone from college students to Army infantry to realtors to chemical supply companies. I believe I'm a good speaker because I think I am a GOOD speaker. But my bar is to be ‘share worthy’—IE: so good that people have to share you—because I want to get to this level where it motivates me to keep refining my craft.”

“I am a former consultant, startup executive, and Zen monk who created the world’s first major in happiness studies. I am told this is a relatively unique background. As for great moments, I pretty much just focus on the day-to-day ingredients for happiness: sleep, exercise, good nutrition, fun activities, learning, mindfulness, and time with loved ones.”

Speaking Tip
For everything you say verbally, you say far more beneath the surface. You do so by using: inflection, physicality, intention, presence, urgency, specificity, suggestion, appreciation, and timing. You are communicating on many of these channels at the same time. And, just because you’re not aware of the messages you’re sending doesn’t mean you’re not sending them. It also doesn’t mean other people aren’t hearing them. The first major vehicle of message-sending is tone-of-voice. Is it warm or cold, harsh or calm, positive or negative? The other vehicle is nonverbals. Are they open or closed, strong or gentle, welcoming or distancing? With both of these vehicles you are stating how much you do or don’t want to connect with others and this attracts or repels your audience.

The Last Word
“The way you overcome shyness is to become so wrapped up in something that you forget to be afraid.”
